Oil on Canvas by Hal Robinson NYC Circa 1930

] This painting was covered with nicotine, surface dirt and discolored varnish. Multiple cleanings were necessary to obtain this great result. The colors are now vibrant and alive.

Oil on Canvas Oyster Bay 1891

This canvas had been stacked off the stretcher  with many other paintings. It was dirty and creased.

The surface dirt was removed and the creases were treated. Areas of loss were filled and retouched. The surface was varnished.  The painting was stretched on a new stretcher as per the customers request.

Barn by the Pond by J Brichell

This painting was in terrible shape. It was ripped in several places and actually has a push pin holding the canvas on the stretcher! The painting was relined with linen to secure the tears and to support the weak canvas.  It was then cleaned. The  areas of loss were filled and retouched. Several coats of a non-yellowing varnish were applied.

Portrait of Mary Magdalene. Circle of Carlo Dolci (Italian 17th Century)

This oil on canvas had many condition problems . There was significant craquelare and  aligatoring paint. Old restorations and in-paint were visible. There were numerous layers of varnish of different types and ages. The stretcher no longer provided adequate support to the painting. There was a loss of canvas on the hand.

Here is the painting in racking light. Notice how the canvas has been distorted around the face and shoulder. Also the old retouched areas on the hair and clothing show as rough areas.

Missing canvas.

Restorations carried out:

The painting was cleaned many times. The varnish had to be removed in layers. Old inpaint and repairs were removed. The painting was relined and attached to new stretcher bars. A fabric inlay was created to fill the missing piece of canvas on the hand. Areas of paint loss were filled. A consolidating varnish was applied and retouches were carried out. Layers of a final varnish were applied.

O/C French Soldier Circa 1880

This painting of a soldier is actually torn in half. The canvas is littered with tears. The dark gray areas are old over paint and fills that have discolored with time. There is a large area of canvas missing from the lower right hand corner. White leading had been used to fill old tears. The varnish had discolored with age.

Areas of tape indicate were there are tears or holes on the canvas.
All the old patches, fills and over paint were removed. When the over paint was removed another soldier appeared!
Varnish and old inpaint were removed.
The painting was relined and attached to new stretcher bars. A fabric inlay was created  for the missing bottom portion. As you can see the old inpaint and varnish hid the wonderful color scheme and subject matter.
