Oil on Canvas Elk signed B. Hendrichs

Stag painting before restoration. The varnish had discolored over time, giving the painting an amber coloration, hiding the vibrant colors beneath.

Layers of varnish and dirt were removed to show a much brighter paint layer.

The dark green discoloration shown here is old inpaint used to cover a torn area of canvas.  After the varnish was removed, this area no longer matched properly and also had to be removed.

The completed painting after cleaning and retouching. The painting was varnished with a non-yellowing brand.

Portrait of Mary Magdalene. Circle of Carlo Dolci (Italian 17th Century)

This oil on canvas had many condition problems . There was significant craquelare and  aligatoring paint. Old restorations and in-paint were visible. There were numerous layers of varnish of different types and ages. The stretcher no longer provided adequate support to the painting. There was a loss of canvas on the hand.

Here is the painting in raking light. Notice how the canvas has been distorted around the face and shoulder. Also the old retouched areas on the hair and clothing show as rough areas.

Missing canvas.

Restorations carried out:

The painting was cleaned many times. The varnish had to be removed in layers. Old inpaint and repairs were removed. The painting was relined and attached to new stretcher bars. A fabric inlay was created to fill the missing piece of canvas on the hand. Areas of paint loss were filled. A isolating varnish was applied and retouches were carried out. Layers of a final varnish were applied.
